Frequently Asked Questions

What grades does SWEC enroll?

SWEC enrolls grades 9 through 12.
What is a charter high school?
A charter high school is an autonomous school within the public school district. It operates under its own board of directors. While charter schools are accountable to parents and the community for meeting high standards, they are typically exempt from most restrictive state and district regulations regarding hiring of teachers and curriculum.
Does SWEC charge tuition?
No. No tuition is charged for either high school or college-level courses. No students are required to by books or other instructional supplies beyond a modest list typical of high school requirements.
What is an Early College?
Early colleges put college within reach of thousands of students every year. An early college is a specific kind of high school designed to move students into college-level courses by their junior year in high school. Credit is "double counted" toward both a high school diploma and a college degree. SWEC pays all tuition and provides all required textbooks for college-level courses.
Can a student earn an associate's degree at SWEC?
Yes. The associates degree option at SWEC allows students who attend all four years at SWEC, in addition to two summer sessions, to earn a high school diploma from SWEC and an associate of arts degree from the Community College of Denver at the same time. The degree option and college coursework are provided at no cost to the student or his or her family.
Is SWEC just for high achievers?
SWEC is for all students, regardless of past performance. We strongly believe that all students, regardless of past academic performance, can achieve in a small school environment and advance quickly to college-level coursework.
